The Club was formed in 1940 as Salford Central and competed in the local Eccles and District Leagues as a team for local boys to play football. Early success came in the form of two Division 2 titles in 1955-56 and 1959-1960, and the Division 3 title in 1958-59
The period from 2022 to the present day has been a fascinating and transformative time for Salford City FC. While the club’s on-field performance has been a mix of highs and lows, the real story has been one of significant change and ambition, particularly behind the scenes.
In the 2022-2023 season, Salford City had a very strong campaign, finishing 7th in League Two and securing a spot in the promotion play-offs. It was a thrilling ride that unfortunately ended with a penalty shootout loss to Stockport County in the semi-finals, a heartbreaking end to an otherwise successful season. This was a peak moment for the club’s on-field performance in this period.
The 2023-2024 season, however, proved to be a challenging one. The club struggled to find its footing and finished 20th, a stark contrast to their previous year’s success. This led to a managerial change, with Karl Robinson taking the helm. Under his leadership, the team had a much-improved 2024-2025 season, finishing a solid 8th, just narrowly missing out on the play-offs again.
The most significant development has been the recent change in ownership. In May 2025, a new ownership group officially acquired the club. While the “Class of ’92” legends like Gary Neville and David Beckham remain central to the club’s vision, this new structure brings in a diverse range of high-profile leaders.

The club has recently appointed a new CEO, Gavin Fleig, who brings valuable experience from the City Football Group. It will have an emphasis on positive physical and mental wellbeing, and supporting people with a disability, people who are experiencing homelessness, or young people who have, or may be at risk of, committing offences. The Foundation is proudly sponsored by 1st CENTRAL. The motor insurance company’s two-year sponsorship deal will help to accelerate the work of the Foundation, and will also see employees from 1ST CENTRAL’s Salford office supporting a number of local projects.
