NYC Ferry

NYC Ferry

NYC Ferry is a network of ferry routes in New York City operated by Hornblower Cruises. As of September 2020, there are five routes, as well as one seasonal route, connecting 21 ferry piers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. NYC Ferry has a total of 31 vessels, providing half-hourly to hourly service on each of the routes. The NYC Ferry system, launched in 2017, has revolutionized public transportation in New York City by connecting waterfront neighborhoods across all five boroughs with affordable and scenic rides.

Operated by Hornblower Cruises, it features six main routes plus a seasonal one, linking 25 piers from bustling Manhattan spots like Wall Street to quieter areas in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. What started as a revival of the city’s historic ferry networks—dating back to Dutch colonial times—now serves millions annually, offering a practical alternative to crowded subways while showcasing skyline views that make commuting feel like a mini-vacation. Riders appreciate the ferry’s convenience, with fares at just $4 one-way and free transfers between routes, making it accessible for daily workers,

tourists, and families exploring the city. Schedules run from early morning to late evening, with vessels departing every 20 to 90 minutes depending on the route and season, and the fleet of 38 boats ensures reliable service even during peak hours. High school students even get discounted tickets, underscoring the system’s role in fostering equitable access to jobs, recreation, and cultural hubs along the East River, Hudson, and beyond.

Beyond transport, the NYC Ferry enhances New York’s quality of life by promoting waterfront revitalization and sustainable travel options amid growing urban density. As the largest passenger ferry fleet in the U.S., it reduces road congestion and emissions while inviting people to linger at landings for picnics or photos against iconic backdrops like the Statue of Liberty. Though subsidized by the city, its popularity continues to grow, proving that in a fast-paced metropolis, a simple boat ride can bridge communities and spark a deeper appreciation for the harbors that shaped Gotham’s spirit.
