Monterey Bay Aquarium

Baja, by Way of Monterey Flashy fishes. Colorful crustaceans. Riveting reptiles. Meet them all in our new special exhibition, ¡Viva Baja! Life on the Edge, featuring animals from Baja’s deserts, mangrove forests and coral reefs. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a non-profit public aquarium located in Monterey, California, United States. The aquarium was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row. Nestled along the rugged Pacific coastline in Monterey, just a couple of hours south of San Francisco, the Monterey Bay Aquarium feels less like a traditional aquarium and more like a living love letter to the ocean. Housed inside the historic Hovden Cannery building on Cannery Row—the very street immortalized by John Steinbeck in his 1945 novel of the same name—the aquarium beautifully marries California’s rich maritime past with cutting-edge marine science. Walking through its doors, you’re instantly transported into the mesmerizing underwater world of one of the planet’s deepest submarine canyons, just offshore. The building itself still carries faint echoes of the sardine-canning boom of the early 20th century, yet today it pulses with the quiet wonder of kelp forests swaying in enormous tanks, moon jellies drifting like living lanterns, and playful sea otters tumbling in sun-dappled pools. It’s a place where history and nature hold hands, reminding every visitor that this stretch of coast has always belonged to the sea.

What truly sets the Monterey Bay Aquarium apart is its rare ability to make you feel both humbled and hopeful at the same time. The iconic Kelp Forest exhibit, one of the tallest aquarium displays in the world, lets you stand eye-to-eye with swaying golden fronds of seaweed and schools of shimmering fish while leopard sharks glide silently overhead. The Open Sea galleries pull you into the vast blue with sardines swirling in hypnotic, ever-shifting spheres and majestic hammerhead sharks cruising past floor-to-ceiling windows. The Tentacles takeover and sea otter feedings add moments of pure joy, while the behind-the-scenes conservation stories—rescuing stranded otters, researching great white sharks, and protecting the bay’s fragile ecosystem—leave you inspired rather than overwhelmed. Whether you’re a wide-eyed child pressing your nose to the glass, a photographer chasing the perfect shot of jellyfish pulsing in neon light, or simply someone craving a peaceful escape from city life, this place wraps you in cool ocean air and wonder. Come early, linger long, and let the rhythm of the tides slow your heartbeat; Monterey Bay Aquarium isn’t just worth the drive from San Francisco—it’s one of those rare destinations that quietly changes how you see the ocean, and your place in it, forever.
