Leptis Magna Beach, Libya
On the beach lie three huge eight meter high columns that in 1680, fifteen hundred years after the Romans had brought them from northern Italy to Leptis Magna to use in the construction of the Hadrianic Baths, Frenchman Claude Lemer attempted to loot and return to Europe.
The Frenchman’s attempt at transporting these columns clearly lacked the Romans’ own ingenuity and so ended in failure on the beach at Leptis Magna.
