Sandy Bay Beach, South Africa

Wedged in the valley of the Twelve Apostles Mountain range naughties and naturalists go nude and free at Sandy Bay Beach.

Situated just south of Llandudno and shielded from sight by Hout Bay sand dunes this is South Africa’s only nudist beach. The deep blue Atlantic Ocean though captivating to stare at is characteristically freezing so dips are usually ankle deep and not for the proud. Big swells sometimes result in splashy beach break with minimum beach for tanning but bulbous boulders to watch the wave display on. Nonetheless hanging out on these shimmering white sands with spectacular mountain and ocean views is a breathtaking experience well worth the trek on a windless day.

The secluded cove of Sandy Bay is a long stretch of beaches naturally divided by granite slabs; the far side of the beach is a popular gay section. The location of this most inaccessible beach of Cape Town affords it its au natural Shangri-La status but requires a 20 minute walk along a path from the small Llandudno parking lot. Parking is always a challenge so go early or walk further. Its remote location makes it a soft target for crime so go during peak hours and stay in groups. Bring all your refreshment supplies in a cooler bag but don’t drink too much – there are no toilets.
