San Jorge de la Mina, UNESCO, Elmina, Ghana
San Jorge de la Mina, was a fortified establishment of Portuguese dominion, located in Africa, on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, in the place that currently occupies the city of Elmina in Ghana.
Founded in 1482 by King Juan II of Portugal, it operated as an important establishment and port of shipment of African products to Portugal, mainly gold.
It remained in the possession of Portugal for 155 years, until it was conquered by the Dutch in 1637. For a time, it was the main place of reference for Portuguese penetration in Africa, while progress was made in the advance of exploration and conquest of the coast towards the south of the continent.
