Marché soumbédioune, Dakar, Senegal
The artisanal village of Soumbédioune is one of the best spaces for the creation and exhibition of local crafts. Today, about 2,000 craftsmen are active in several areas, including leather goods, pottery, jewelery, weaving, bookbinding, basketry. Despite the decrease in attendance by tourists and other customers, caused by the Tunnel Soumbédioune which would enclose the site according to Paco, resident of the Village and secretary general of their association, the activity seeks somehow to find the purpose of the tunnel.
Grouped by professional category, the artisans exhibit a wide choice of sculpted works (statues, useful objects in wood …). There are also various leather goods (bags, briefcases, purses, office desks …), based on cowhide, snake, goat, crocodile
