Castelo Real of Mogador, Essaouira, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco
Castelo Real was a Portuguese castle established in Mogador, modern Essaouira (Morocco), by the Portuguese in 1506.
Mogador was the natural port of the city of Marrakesh and a place where attacks against the Portuguese ships departed , according to Damião de Góis. Its occupation would reinforce the military situation of Santa Cruz do Cabo Guer , built a year earlier, and establish a presence near the factory of Safim , created in 1471, already anticipating its conquest. The cereal wealth of this area would be another factor of interest for Portugal.
The fortress, named after the Royal Castle of Mogador , was to be built in that year of 1506, but Portugal could only maintain it until 1510.
