Pop’s View Lookout is a rest area with view just of the Te Anau to Milford highway. It was dedicated to Robert Alistair Andrew, who was killed in an avalanche in 1983.
After travelling through the Eglinton Valley the road then makes its way through lush forest full of moss-covered trees and past the pretty Lake Gunn. The Divide, 83 km from Te Anau, is the lowest east-west pass in the Southern Alps and marks the start of several well known walking tracks, including the 32 km Routeburn Track. Two kilometres past The Divide, look for a small parking area and fenced lookout – this is Pop’s View, which has some great views over the Hollyford Valley. It’s also an excellent spot to see kea, the cheeky alpine parrots common to the more elevated parts of the South Island
