Russell Nature Walks, Russell 0272, Northland, New Zealand

Russell is one of the last areas where two rare birds – Kiwi and North Island Weka – can be seen in the wild.

Located in privately owned native forest 2.5km south of Russell, guided day and night tours provide the opportunity to see native birds, including the weka and tui, and insects such as the weta. Glowworms softly illuminate night tours, and after dark there’s the opportunity to hear (and very occasionally see) kiwi. Walks last 1½ to two hours.
