Fuguijiao Lighthouse, Shimen District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Fugui Cape (富貴角), Sandiao Cape (三貂角) and Bitou Cape (鼻頭角) are known to be the three most significant capes in the North Coast, while Fugui Cape is the one located at the northernmost tip of mainland Taiwan. Standing at the very end of the trail within Fugui Cape Park, Fugui Cape Lighthouse is an octagonal tower painted with black and white horizontal bands in order to stand out against the horizon during periods of fog or low clouds.

Fugui Cape Lighthouse was first built by the Japanese in 1896, and all the materials used during the construction were shipped directly from Japan. It has been around for more than a century but is preserved mostly in its original form. The unique location and eye-catching stripes make Fugui Cape Lighthouse one of the most identifiable landmarks in the North Coast.

Early spring is greeted by white lilies that wave gracefully to and fro on their elegant stalks — something that flower lovers should not miss out on. The coastline abundant with ventifacts (風稜石, literally “wind-carved rocks”) is another unique scene not to be missed here. Next time while you are on the North Coast, try to slow down your pace and look around you. Be prepared for what could very well be one of the biggest surprises you have never expected to find as the natural wonder of North Coast is one of a kind.
