Cedar Ridge Preserve

Cedar Ridge Preserve offers a rugged wilderness challenge that feels worlds away from the nearby urban sprawl. Situated on a high elevation, this protected sanctuary features nine miles of intense hiking trails slicing through beautiful hill country terrain, limestone escarpments, and thick forested valleys. It is a favorite location for trekkers looking to push their endurance while observing rare native wildlife and stunning panoramic vistas.

Cedar Ridge Preserve, located just twenty miles from downtown Dallas, offers a surprisingly rugged escape from the surrounding North Texas flatlands. Managed by Audubon Dallas, this 600-acre natural oasis sits on a limestone escarpment, rising roughly 755 feet above sea level to provide stunning, panoramic views of Joe Pool Lake. The preserve serves as a vital slice of hill country habitat right on the edge of the city, where dense forests of native eastern red cedar, ash, and various oaks seamlessly blend with pockets of open, sun-drenched blackland prairie.

For outdoor enthusiasts and hikers, the preserve features a well-maintained network of nine distinct trails that total about nine miles of trekking. These paths range from flat, family-friendly loops to surprisingly steep, rocky descents that challenge hikers with elevation changes rarely found elsewhere in the metroplex. Along the way, the trails wind through deep, shaded valleys and across quiet creek beds, offering a peaceful sensory experience filled with the scent of cedar wood and the crunch of limestone gravel underfoot. Benches and scenic overlooks are thoughtfully placed throughout the trail system, inviting visitors to pause and take in the expansive vistas.

Beyond its recreational appeal, Cedar Ridge Preserve is a critical wildlife sanctuary and an educational hub for conservation. It is an especially popular destination for birdwatchers, as the diverse ecosystems attract a wide array of avian species, including the rare and endangered golden-cheeked warbler, which nests exclusively in Texas cedar brakes. Visitors can frequently spot wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and various colorful butterflies dancing over the native wildflowers. The preserve strictly operates as a non-profit natural area, emphasizing a “leave no trace” philosophy to ensure that its pristine beauty and ecological integrity remain protected for generations to come.
