Beit el-Wali Temple

A vibrant rock-cut sanctuary celebrating the early military triumphs of Ramses II. The Temple of Beit el-Wali is the oldest of the Nubian temples commissioned by Ramses II, originally carved into the sandstone cliffs near Aswan. This intimate rock-cut monument is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved reliefs, which depict the young pharaoh’s early military campaigns and the diverse tributes—including gold and exotic wildlife—brought from the southern lands.

Like many other Nubian treasures, the temple was meticulously relocated to Kalabsha Island in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of Lake Nasser. The interior of the temple provides an inspiring and colorful look at New Kingdom artistry, with original pigments still visible on the walls, offering a beautiful and motivating glimpse into the life of a young king establishing his divine authority.
