Named for Armenia’s patron and first Catholicos, this institution carries in its very title the weight of a nation’s deepest faith and most enduring spirit. Founded in 1977 by Academician Suren K. Avdalbekian, the centre began its life as Municipal Emergency Aid Hospital No. 2, before being transformed in 1991 into the Emergency Scientific Medical Center — the primary trauma and emergency anchor of the Armenian capital. Its journey since then has been one of extraordinary ambition. For the first time in Armenia and the entire CIS, a large diversified surgery-oriented hospital was used to establish a Grade 2 Traumatic Centre complying with full international standards. This was not merely an administrative designation — it signified a fundamental transformation in how critical and traumatic care is delivered across the Caucasus.
Departments of Emergency Medical Services and Resuscitation, Surgery, Proctology, and Therapy have all received the internationally acclaimed Magnet status, granted by the World Health Organization to medical institutions and nursing staff of distinguished excellence. The reach of this institution extends even beyond daily clinical care — the World Health Organization has designated the centre as a national base for rapid response to extraordinary situations and disasters. This is a hospital that does not merely treat injury; it stands as Armenia’s shield in moments of catastrophe.
