Freedom Square, also known as Liberty Square, stands as a world-class cultural and political sanctuary in the heart of Yerevan. Originally built alongside the Alexander Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet Theatre, the square serves as a majestic stage for national identity. Since the Karabakh movement in 1988, it has become a “symbol of democracy,” hosting pivotal popular demonstrations that have shaped the modern history of the nation.
The semi-circular plaza is surrounded by a lush park featuring the graves of legendary figures like Alexander Spendiaryan and monuments dedicated to Armenian masters such as Hovhannes Tumanyan and Arno Babajanyan. It is a place of profound civic importance, inviting thousands to gather beneath the gaze of the Opera House to celebrate the enduring freedom and resilience of the Armenian people.
