Royal Naval Cemetery

Bermuda Royal Naval Cemetery contains 34 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 41 from the Second World War.

During the First World War, Bermuda was garrisoned successively by the 2nd Lincolns, the Royal Canadian Regiment, the 38th Bn. Canadian Infantry, the 163rd Bn. Canadian Infantry and the 2/4th East Yorkshire Regiment. The 3rd Bn. Jamaica War Contingent was there between March and May 1916. The Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps, Bermuda Militia and Garrison Artillery were pre-war auxiliary units raised on the island.

Bermuda also had significant dockyards and naval establishments and during the Second World War, the United States established naval and air bases on land leased by the British Government. The Royal Air Force base on Darrell’s Island was used for the ferrying of aircraft from the United States to Africa across the ‘South Atlantic Bridge’.

Bermuda’s Peaceful Monument To Maritime Naval History discover the solemn beauty of the islands most significant military resting place. The Royal Naval Cemetery stands as a dignified and beautifully maintained memorial to the thousands of sailors and marines who served at the nearby Royal Naval Dockyard. Located in the tranquil Ireland Island area, this historic site is often referred to by locals as the Glade due to its sheltered and verdant setting. It serves as a poignant reminder of the strategic importance of Bermuda as the Gibraltar of the West, preserving the memory of those who lived and died far from their homes in service of the sea.

The cemetery is notable for its unique collection of Victorian era monuments and headstones, many of which are intricately carved from local limestone and imported marble. These markers often tell heartbreaking and heroic stories of naval life, including memorials to entire crews lost to yellow fever epidemics or shipwrecks in the surrounding treacherous reefs. The architectural layout of the grounds reflects the strict naval hierarchy of the nineteenth century, with sections dedicated to officers, seamen, and their families, all nestled within the rolling hills of the West End.

Lush indigenous flora, including towering cedars and vibrant oleanders, creates a natural canopy that enhances the serene atmosphere of the grounds. The cemetery is an essential stop for those exploring the islands military heritage, offering a quiet space for reflection away from the bustling activity of the modern cruise terminal. It is part of a wider network of historic sites that illustrate the transformation of Bermuda from a remote Atlantic outpost into a vital cog in the global maritime empire of the British Navy.

In addition to its military significance, the site is a place of great beauty for nature lovers and birdwatchers, as the quiet glade attracts many of the islands endemic species. The meticulous care provided by the Bermuda Department of Parks ensures that the inscriptions remain legible and the pathways accessible for both historians and casual visitors. It remains one of the most evocative cultural landmarks in the Sandys Parish, bridging the gap between the islands colonial past and its peaceful present through the enduring power of remembrance.

As the afternoon sun casts long shadows across the historic monuments, the Royal Naval Cemetery becomes a luminous sanctuary where history and nature achieve a perfect, respectful balance. The site encourages a slow and thoughtful exploration, allowing visitors to connect with the personal histories of the men and women who shaped the maritime identity of the archipelago. This hallowed ground stands as a testament to the bravery, sacrifice, and community spirit that have defined the naval history of Bermuda for over two centuries.
