Springfield & Gilbert Nature Reserve

Historic woodland and plantation heritage unite in Bermuda’s peaceful western sanctuary. Yet just beyond Somerset Village in Sandys Parish, Springfield and Gilbert Nature Reserve offers a rare fusion of natural beauty and historic depth. This tranquil five-acre woodland, protected by the Bermuda National Trust, invites visitors into one of the island’s last surviving pockets of mature cedar forest, where quiet trails weave through an environment largely unchanged for generations.

The reserve is especially valued for its ecological significance, with native Bermuda cedars rising above shaded pathways and providing a haven for birdlife. Gentle walking routes connect seamlessly to the Bermuda Railway Trail, allowing visitors to extend their journey through one of Bermuda’s most scenic and historically rich corridors.

Adjacent to the woodland lies Springfield, a beautifully preserved plantation estate dating back to the 1740s. Its architecture, including the iconic buttery and surrounding outbuildings, reflects Bermuda’s early colonial life, offering a tangible connection to the island’s layered past.

Together, the reserve and historic estate create a uniquely immersive experience, where nature and heritage exist side by side. It is a place of quiet discovery, where the rustle of cedar leaves and the enduring presence of centuries-old structures combine to tell a story of resilience, continuity, and Bermudian identity.
