Bermuda Society of Arts

The Bermuda Society of Arts, often referred to as the People’s Gallery, is a bustling hub of creativity that champions the voices of local artists and artisans. As the oldest established arts organization on the island, it provides a warm and inclusive platform for both emerging and established talents to showcase their work. The gallery’s energetic atmosphere and frequently changing shows reflect the dynamic and diverse spirit of the community, ranging from traditional watercolors to bold modern installations. It is a fantastic place to witness the raw passion of Bermudian creativity and to discover unique pieces that tell the story of the island’s contemporary life.

The Bermuda Society of Arts, affectionately known as the People’s Gallery, is Bermuda’s oldest arts organization, established in 1952 by a group of 25 enthusiastic artists and supporters. Originally called the Society of Artists in Bermuda, it was formally recognized by an Act of Parliament in 1956, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of the island’s cultural landscape. As a registered charity, it serves as a vibrant hub for local and international artists, fostering creativity through regular exhibitions, educational programs, and community engagement that celebrate Bermuda’s rich artistic heritage and contemporary expressions.

Housed in a historic building in Hamilton, the Society features multiple gallery spaces where artwork rotates frequently, showcasing paintings, sculptures, and mixed media from both established and emerging talents. It hosts a diverse array of exhibitions, including student shows, themed displays, and special events that highlight Bermudian identity, Black history, and global influences. With free admission and a welcoming atmosphere, the Bermuda Society of Arts actively promotes accessibility to the arts, encouraging visitors and members alike to appreciate and participate in the island’s thriving creative scene.

Over the decades, the organization has grown significantly, expanding its membership to hundreds while maintaining its commitment to nurturing artistic talent and preserving cultural traditions. Through ongoing initiatives like school art exhibitions and collaborative projects, it continues to inspire future generations and strengthen Bermuda’s position as a dynamic center for the arts in the Atlantic region. The Society remains dedicated to its founding vision of making art an integral and inclusive part of community life.
