Dataland Museum

DATALAND is the world’s first Museum of AI Arts, a visionary 25,000-square-foot institution located within the iconic Grand LA complex in Downtown Los Angeles. Co-founded by the world-renowned media artist Refik Anadol and his creative partner Efsun Erkılıç, the museum represents a groundbreaking “living ecosystem” where human imagination intersects with the creative potential of machine intelligence. By utilizing massive data sets and sophisticated algorithms as a “thinking brush,” DATALAND offers an uplifting glimpse into a future where technology serves to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity and wonder.

Historically, the museum’s opening in Spring 2026 marks a significant homecoming for Refik Anadol Studio, which has spent the last decade pioneering data aesthetics from its base in Los Angeles. The location is deeply symbolic; situated directly across from Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall—the very building where Anadol’s 2018 “WDCH Dreams” projections captivated the city—DATALAND now occupies a permanent space within a Gehry-designed masterpiece. This evolution from temporary public installations to a dedicated museum marks the institutionalization of AI art, establishing a permanent home for a movement that bridges the gap between digital innovation and classical fine art.

Culturally, DATALAND serves as a beacon of “Ethical AI” and accessibility, aiming to demystify complex technologies for audiences of all backgrounds. The museum’s inaugural exhibitions are powered by the Large Nature Model, the world’s first open-source AI model trained exclusively on ethical, nature-focused data from partners like the Smithsonian and the Natural History Museum. This commitment to sustainability is reflected in the museum’s physical infrastructure, designed by Gensler and Arup to be powered by renewable energy. By focusing on themes of flora, fauna, and fungi, the museum encourages a cultural shift toward using artificial intelligence as a tool for ecological preservation and collective memory.

For the modern traveler, DATALAND offers a multisensory touristic experience unlike any other, featuring five distinct galleries including the legendary Infinity Room. This immersive “data sculpture” uses 42 large-scale projectors to dissolve architectural boundaries, surrounding visitors with undulating pulses of light and AI-generated scents—such as the smell of a digital rainforest—created from a database of 500,000 unique aromas. Visitors can also engage with the museum’s nonprofit branch, the RAS AI Foundation, which hosts artist residencies and public lectures. As a centerpiece of the Grand Avenue arts corridor, it stands as an essential destination for those seeking to witness the birth of a new artistic paradigm.
