Mersey Valley Sports Club, located at Banky Lane, Ashton-upon-Mersey (M33 5SL) in Greater Manchester, serves as a key facility for youth development and training in partnership with Salford City F.C.. The club, originally established as a community sports venue, has in recent years become central to Salford City’s academy programme.
The role of Mersey Valley extends beyond a simple training ground: from July 2025 the Salford City Academy moved into the site as their “new home”, providing dedicated space for the club’s Under-9s to Under-18s development teams. The facility enables the club to consolidate its youth pathway, giving the next generation of players a stable environment with focused coaching, modern training surfaces and a setting away from the match-day pressures.
In terms of facilities, Mersey Valley Sports Club offers multiple outdoor grass pitches suitable for full-sided and smaller-sided training sessions, as well as the clubhouse, changing rooms, meeting/analysis rooms and parking typical of a community football complex. Though exact numbers of pitches are not fully publicised, the site’s capacity provides enough flexibility for academy training blocks, fixture preparation and player development activity under Salford City’s programme. The clubhouse and ancillary spaces support off-pitch development — tactical briefings, fitness/recovery sessions and coach education.
While the venue remains community-oriented, its affiliation with Salford City reinforces the club’s ambitions to build a sustainable talent pipeline and local footballing identity. By embedding the academy at Mersey Valley, Salford City not only expands its infrastructure but also strengthens its presence in the Greater Manchester youth football ecosystem, creating a bridge between community sport and the professional game.
