Great Hall of the People. Located on the western side of Tiananmen Square, this monumental structure is the nation’s highest legislative and ceremonial venue. It is the seat of the National People’s Congress (NPC), constitutionally the “highest organ of state power,” where nearly 3,000 delegates gather annually for the pivotal “Two Sessions.” This is where national laws are formally approved, leaders are “elected,” and major state announcements are made, giving it an unparalleled symbolic importance as the stage for China’s state-level political theatre and grand diplomatic events. Its sheer scale and position opposite the National Museum of China and Mao’s Mausoleum cement its role as a visible pillar of the modern state.
