Federal Bureau of Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the principal federal investigative and domestic intelligence agency of the United States, operating under the Department of Justice. Established in 1908, the FBI’s mission is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, uphold and enforce federal criminal laws, and provide leadership and support to federal, state, local, and international partners.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Bureau maintains 56 field offices across the United States, along with over 300 resident agencies and a global network of legal attachés. Its areas of responsibility span counterterrorism, counterintelligence, cybercrime, public corruption, organized crime, white-collar crime, violent crime, and civil rights enforcement. The FBI also manages advanced forensic, scientific, and technical services for law enforcement nationwide through its Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division and Laboratory Division.

Guided by its core values—integrity, accountability, and fairness—the FBI plays a dual role as both a law enforcement and intelligence agency. It is committed to safeguarding national security while upholding constitutional rights, building trust with communities, and ensuring justice through impartial and professional service.
