Aylesbury Waterside Theatre opened its doors on 12 October 2010, built as part of a major regeneration of the town centre to replace the old Civic Centre Theatre. The design, by Norman Bragg and the Arts Team of AedasRHWL, was conceived to reflect the rolling Chiltern Hills and nearby woodlands: undulating rooflines, timber fins, and curved, organic shapes abound.
The building is not just striking visually — it also incorporates thoughtful acoustic design (including an electroacoustic enhancement system called CARMEN) so different styles of performance (from amplified music to opera and dance) work well. The theatre has a main auditorium seating about 1,200 people, which can be converted to accommodate up to ~1,800 standing for suitable events. There is also a smaller studio/performance space (often referred to as the Norman Bragg Studio or Second Space) for more intimate shows, community events, meetings or other functions.
