Chafariz das Musas

The Chafariz das Musas (Fountain of the Muses) is a beautiful and historic fountain that is one of the most beloved treasures within the Jardim Botânico in Rio de Janeiro. While it looks like it was always meant to be in its current location, the fountain has a fascinating journey that took it from England to the heart of Brazil. Crafted in cast iron in Derby, England, by sculptor Herbert W. Hogg in the late 19th century, the fountain was originally intended for another location. It was first installed in the Largo da Lapa in downtown Rio de Janeiro, but for various reasons, it never functioned there.

In 1895, the fountain found its permanent home at the Jardim Botânico, brought there by the then-director, João Barbosa Rodrigues, who was a passionate advocate for the garden. The fountain is a gorgeous piece of art, featuring four figures representing the muses of music, poetry, science, and art, drawing on Greek mythology to inspire creativity and knowledge.

Today, the Chafariz das Musas stands as a stunning monument at the intersection of nature and history. It’s an iconic and popular spot for visitors to admire its intricate details, take photos, and appreciate a piece of European artistry set against the backdrop of Rio’s lush tropical flora. Getting There: Once inside the garden, you’ll find the fountain on the central avenue, known as the Barbosa Rodrigues Avenue, which is lined with the famous royal palms. It’s one of the key landmarks you can’t miss.
