Fortaleza de São João

The Fortaleza de São João (Saint John’s Fortress) is a place of immense historical significance in Rio de Janeiro, marking the exact point of the city’s foundation on March 1, 1565. Located in the Urca neighborhood at the entrance to Guanabara Bay, this imposing fortress is not just a military structure but a living museum that tells the story of the founding of the “Marvelous City” and its defense over the centuries. The fortress is a complex that includes the Sugarloaf Mountain, Morro da Urca, Cara de Cão Hill, and Morro da Babilônia, and it was the stage for crucial battles and events in Brazil’s history.

Beyond its historical importance, Fortaleza de São João offers one of the most beautiful views of Guanabara Bay, with stunning vistas of Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado. Its strategic location allows for a unique perspective of the city. The fortress is managed by the Army Physical Training Center (CCFEx) and is open for visits, with operating hours from Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is an unmissable destination for those who want to delve into the history of Rio and appreciate a breathtaking view.
