Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa

The Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa, located in Rio de Janeiro’s Botafogo neighborhood, is a cultural institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of Ruy Barbosa, a prominent Brazilian jurist, politician, and intellectual. Established in 1927 and transformed into a foundation in 1966, it operates as Brazil’s first public museum-house, showcasing Barbosa’s residence from 1895 to 1923. Its mission includes promoting research, education, and cultural activities centered on Barbosa’s life and work.

The museum preserves a rich collection of over 1,500 objects, including furniture, personal items, and four historical vehicles, reflecting the lifestyle of Brazil’s early republican era. Its extensive library, with 37,000 volumes, and an archive of over 60,000 documents are vital resources for researchers studying Brazilian history and culture. The 9,000-square-meter historical garden, restored in 2016, highlights Barbosa’s passion for gardening and adds to the site’s cultural significance.

Beyond preservation, the foundation hosts events like the International Congress of Cordel Literature and lectures on topics such as digital sovereignty and Brazilian culture. It engages the community through educational programs, workshops, and free access to its garden, fostering a connection to Brazil’s intellectual heritage. The institution remains a key center for interdisciplinary research in museology, architecture, and archival studies.
