Church of Saint Francis of Penitence

Church of Saint Francis of Penitence (Igreja de São Francisco da Penitência) – Renowned for its exuberant rococo and baroque decoration, a hidden jewel in downtown Rio. The Church of Saint Francis of Penitence, located in Rio de Janeiro’s Centro district, is a stunning example of Brazilian Baroque architecture. Built in the 18th century, it boasts an opulent interior adorned with 800 kilos of gold leaf. Its intricate wood carvings and frescoes make it a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts.

Founded by the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1619, the church was constructed between 1726 and 1748, showcasing the wealth of colonial Brazil. The ceiling features vibrant paintings by Caetano da Costa Coelho, depicting scenes from Saint Francis of Assisi’s life. Adjacent to the Convent of Santo Antônio, it now serves as a Museum of Sacred Art.

Despite its unassuming exterior, the church’s lavish interior, including a jacaranda wood altar, rivals European cathedrals. Visitors can explore underground catacombs, used until 1850, with advance booking. Open Tuesday to Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM, it offers a serene escape in bustling downtown Rio.
