Palácio Tiradentes

This majestic building is the seat of the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (ALERJ). Originally built as a prison in 1792, it was reconstructed in the 1920s with a magnificent eclectic-style facade. It was the home of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies until 1960. Today, it is where state laws are debated and passed, making it a central point of contemporary political life in Rio.
