Centro Cultural Cândido José de Araújo

The Centro Cultural Cândido José de Araújo, often called “Candinho,” is a cultural center in Rio de Janeiro with a unique and powerful connection to the history of a major Brazilian sports club. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of sports, culture, and social history in Brazil. The center is a tribute to Cândido José de Araújo, the first Black president of the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama. The building itself is historically significant because it’s located on the site of the first headquarters of the club. In 2024, the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly officially recognized the center as a Historical, Cultural, and Tourist Heritage of Rio de Janeiro, acknowledging its importance not just to the Vasco da Gama club but to the entire state.

The center was founded in 2020 through a crowdfunding campaign led by fans to preserve this important site. While the center has faced financial challenges and periods of closure, it continues to be a space for cultural programming, debates, and events. Its mission is to be a place of gathering and memory for fans, but its historical significance extends far beyond that. The center’s exhibitions are focused on the rich history of the Vasco da Gama club and its strong connection to the Afro-Brazilian community.

They often feature historical photos, artifacts, and information about the club’s role in promoting racial integration in Brazilian sports. One of the main attractions is a bust of Cândido José de Araújo himself, honoring his legacy. You can visit the center at Rua Sacadura Cabral, 345 – Saúde, Rio de Janeiro, in the area known as “Pequena África” (Little Africa), which is a hub of Afro-Brazilian history and culture. While the center has had an unstable schedule in the past, it has been working to revitalize its operations and host events, especially around Vasco’s soccer matches.
