Victoria Barracks – Coldstream Guards

Victoria Barracks in Windsor is an active British Army barracks with a rich history and a crucial role in royal ceremonial duties. It’s best known as the starting point for the troops who perform the world-famous Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle.

History

The original barracks were built in 1853 and underwent an expansion in 1911. However, the original structures were completely demolished in 1988, with a modern, new barracks being constructed in their place between 1989 and 1993.This modern facility serves as the garrison for the Coldstream Guards, one of the five Foot Guards regiments.

Current Use

The barracks remain a vital military facility. Its primary and most visible function is as the base for the troops who conduct the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Windsor Castle, a daily tradition when the King is in residence. The troops, often from the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards, march from the barracks to the castle for the ceremony. The barracks also serve as a residential and training base for soldiers of the British Army’s Household Division, ensuring their readiness for both ceremonial and operational duties
