Spalentor

Two of the remaining medieval city gates—Spalentor (circa 1400s) offers climbable ramparts, while St. Alban Gate leads into a historic district of Basel. Historical gateway standing proud amid Basel’s centuries‑old urban tapestry. Spalentor, one of Basel’s three surviving medieval gates, is an enduring icon of the city’s fortified past. Built around the mid‑14th century to guard the western entrance, it features imposing towers, decorative statues and heraldic motifs that reflect both the defensive and civic pride of Basel’s early urban identity. Today it stands freely in the Spalenvorstadt, a beloved landmark for both locals and visitors exploring the old town nightlife and photo routes.
