Councillor Martin Rowley BEM stands as an inspiring figure in public service, currently serving as the Lord Mayor of York for the civic year 2025-2026. His journey to this prestigious and historic office is a testament to a lifetime committed to his community and nation. Born in Norfolk and raised in Sheffield, Martin’s early life saw him join the Army in September 1978, serving with distinction in the Royal Signals. His military career took him across the globe, including postings in Germany, Northern Ireland, and the Falkland Islands, imbuing him with a deep sense of duty and discipline that would later define his civilian contributions.
Following his military service, Martin’s diverse career path included roles in the electricity board and sales before he pursued a calling in ministry, serving as an assistant Pastor and then Pastor. Returning to York in 2001, he retrained as a Financial Advisor and, in 2013, established Rowley & Sons Family Funeral Services with his wife, building a well-respected business deeply embedded in the community. Beyond his professional life, Martin’s dedication to public service shines through his extensive voluntary work. He has been a school governor for over 35 years, served as a Magistrate, and is a trustee for various charities, including local York-based organizations and national initiatives like ‘Street Angels,’ which he helped develop in York.
In 2019, Martin’s commitment to his community led to his election as a Councillor for the Osbaldwick & Derwent Ward on the City of York Council, a seat he successfully retained in 2023. As an Army Veteran, he passionately serves as the council’s ‘Armed Forces Advocate,’ working closely with military units and veteran groups in the city. His profound contributions to the community were formally recognized when he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) by HM Queen Elizabeth II in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List. Now, as Lord Mayor, Councillor Rowley continues to lead with compassion and a desire to make a tangible difference, embodying the spirit of selflessness and unwavering dedication to the people of York.
