Ambassador José Pascual Marco

Mr José Pascual Marco was born in Madrid in 1958. He holds degrees in both Law and Philosophy, and a Diploma on International Studies from the Spanish Diplomatic Academy. He became a member of the Spanish Foreign Service in 1983.
During his diplomatic career, he was posted to Pakistan, Nicaragua, Australia, Turkey and South Africa. He was Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2003 to 2006 and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Spain to the USA 2006-2010. He was Ambassador- Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain to the EU from 2010 to 2015.
Mr José Pascual Marco was named in 2015 Director General for Cultural Policy and Cultural Industries and the Book Sector in the Spanish Ministry for Education, Culture and Sport. From 2017 to 2021 he was Director General for Coordination of EU Common Policies and General Affairs at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. He was appointed Ambassador of Spain to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in August 2021.

Born in Spain and educated with academic distinction in both Spain and abroad, Ambassador Pascual Marco cultivated a lifelong passion for literature, international relations, and service. He earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters, and later studied European integration and public administration—equipping him with the intellectual breadth and strategic insight to navigate a complex global landscape. His multilingual fluency and cultural empathy allowed him to connect meaningfully with people across all walks of life.

Before his appointment to London, Ambassador Marco served in prestigious roles including as Director-General for Cultural and Scientific Relations at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he championed Spain’s global cultural diplomacy. He was also a key figure in the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, and a respected delegate to the United Nations and European Union. Through each post, he demonstrated a rare blend of statesmanship, humility, and unwavering dedication to peace and cooperation.

Since arriving in London, he has tirelessly worked to strengthen the Spain–UK relationship—supporting the Spanish diaspora, advancing economic and educational collaboration, and fostering friendship between the two nations, especially in the post-Brexit era. His leadership reflects both honour and warmth—an ambassador of the people as much as of the state.
