Great Chesters Fort / MC43 – Hadrian’s Wall

Great Chesters Fort, known in Roman times as Aesica, is a well-preserved Roman fort located along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. Built around 128 AD, the fort covers roughly three acres and was strategically positioned to guard the Caw Gap, a vital crossing over the Haltwhistle Burn. The fort’s construction required the removal of Milecastle 43, which previously stood on the site. Its location along Hadrian’s Wall made it an important military outpost during Roman Britain.

Visitors to Great Chesters Fort can explore the remains of its walls, gates, and the Roman Military Way that once ran through the site. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, giving a sense of the strategic importance the Romans placed on controlling this frontier. The site is easily accessible via popular hiking routes such as the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall Path, making it a favored destination for both history enthusiasts and walkers.

Nearby, visitors can find additional attractions related to Roman history, including the Roman Army Museum and the iconic Sycamore Gap. These sites further enrich the understanding of the Roman Empire’s northern frontier and its legacy. Great Chesters Fort provides a fascinating glimpse into Roman military architecture and the enduring history of Hadrian’s Wall.
