Mr. Kanbar Hossein-Bor the Inspirational New British High Commissioner to Fiji makes History
Kanbar Hossein-Bor’s life story exemplifies resilience and the ability to turn challenges into opportunities. Born in Iran into a well-known Balochi family, he was forced to flee his home at the age of six due to political upheaval. His journey as a refugee took him across the borders into Pakistan and eventually to the United Kingdom, where he reunited with his mother. Settling in Southampton, he faced the daunting task of learning a new language and adapting to an unfamiliar environment. A memorable school trip to France, where a teacher showed exceptional kindness despite his travel document challenges, left a lasting impression on him. Later, playing the role of Winston Churchill in a school production inspired his growing interest in public service.
Kanbar Hossein-Bor has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the UK’s first High Commissioner with a refugee background. His position in Fiji also encompasses responsibilities in Kiribati, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands. Reflecting on his experiences, he has often emphasised the importance of challenging stereotypes and demonstrating how people from diverse backgrounds can thrive when given the right opportunities. Hossein-Bor has dedicated much of his career to promoting diversity and inclusion, often sharing his personal journey to inspire others. Kanbar’s pursuit of education and law began at Warwick University, where he earned his degree, followed by advanced studies in International Law at Cambridge University. He trained as a barrister and was honored as a Lord Denning Scholar at Lincoln’s Inn. After practicing constitutional and criminal law, he shifted to a diplomatic career, taking on roles that demanded leadership and a global perspective. His assignments included serving in Baghdad, leading the Libya team at the Foreign Office, and acting as Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka.
Biography
Mr Kanbar Hossein-Bor has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji, non-resident British High Commissioner to the Republic of Kiribati and His Majesty’s non-resident Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in succession to Dr Brian Jones who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Hossein-Bor will take up his appointment during July 2025.
