Vimy Memorial Bridge

The Vimy Memorial Bridge in Ottawa is a striking symbol of Canada’s military heritage, dedicated to honoring the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War I. Completed in 2014, the bridge spans the Rideau River, linking the communities of Barrhaven and Riverside South. Its design features three elegant white steel arches that rise dramatically over the river, creating a memorable and graceful silhouette.

The bridge supports six vehicle lanes, including two dedicated bus lanes, as well as bike lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Originally called the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge, it was renamed the Vimy Memorial Bridge to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the pivotal Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge.

Beyond its practical role in easing traffic, the bridge stands as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of Canadian soldiers. Its innovative design has been recognized for engineering excellence, blending modern infrastructure with deep national significance. The Vimy Memorial Bridge is open year-round and serves as both a vital transportation link and a meaningful place for reflection on Canada’s history and legacy.
