Erriberako merkatua

Historic marketplace with a wide array of foods including produce, fish, meats, bread & pickles. Europe’s largest covered market, offering fresh produce, local delicacies, and a vibrant atmosphere. Erriberako Merkatua, or Mercado de la Ribera, is a historic food market situated along the Nervión River in Bilbao’s Casco Viejo. Opened in 1929 and designed by architect Pedro Ispizua, the building is notable for its unique inverted ship-like architecture. Recognized by the Guinness World Records in 1990 as the largest covered food market in the world, it spans over 10,000 square meters and houses more than 60 vendors offering a diverse array of products, including fresh produce, meats, seafood, cheeses, and local specialties. Erriberako Merkatua continues to be a vital part of Bilbao’s cultural and culinary landscape, offering both locals and tourists a vibrant space to experience the city’s rich gastronomic traditions.
