Bilbao’s Industrial Legacy Meets Artistic Expression. Carola Garabia, also known as the Carola Crane, is a striking emblem of Bilbao’s industrial past, situated along the Nervión River at Ramón de la Sota Kaia, 1, in the Abando district. This iconic red crane, operational from 1957 until 1987, once served the bustling Euskalduna shipyards and now stands as a monument to the city’s maritime heritage. Named after a young woman, Carola, whose daily crossings of the estuary captivated shipyard workers, the crane embodies a blend of historical significance and local folklore. Today, it forms part of the exhibition at the nearby Itsasmuseum, offering visitors a tangible connection to Bilbao’s shipbuilding era.
