Hanseviertel Bryggen, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway

The history of medieval wooden houses so typical of Bergen begins during the heyday of Bergen, which began in the 12th century and was based on the trade in stockfish, cereals, butter and beer. This trade prospered on the basis of generous privileges granted by the Danish kings to merchants of the Hanseatic League from the 14th century. In the following years they settled down with their families in the port city of Bergen.
