Ambassador Dr. Greg French

Dr. Greg French serves as Australia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). He commenced his tenure in April 2023. Dr. French holds a Bachelor of Arts/Laws from Macquarie University, as well as a Master of Laws and a Doctor of Law from the University of Münster. He is proficient in both German and Italian.

Prior to his current role, Dr. French was seconded to the Department of Defence, where he served as the Senior Legal and Non-Proliferation Adviser for the Nuclear Powered Submarine Taskforce. Throughout his extensive career with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), he has held various positions that have equipped him with a deep understanding of international law and diplomacy.

As Ambassador, Dr. French represents Australian interests in the Netherlands, engages with Dutch authorities, and oversees Australia’s participation in international organizations based in The Hague, including the OPCW. The Australian Embassy in The Hague serves as Australia’s sole diplomatic mission in the country, providing consular assistance to Australian citizens and promoting bilateral relations. Dr. French’s academic achievements and linguistic skills complement his diplomatic expertise, enabling him to effectively navigate complex international legal frameworks and foster strong relationships between Australia and the Netherlands.
