Andrew Barr is an Australian politician who has served as the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) since December 2014. He is a member of the Australian Labor Party and has represented the electorate of Molonglo (later Kurrajong) in the ACT Legislative Assembly since 2006.
Born on April 29, 1973, in Lismore, New South Wales, Barr moved to Canberra in his youth and completed his education at Lake Ginninderra College before attending the Australian National University (ANU), where he earned a degree in political science. His political career began with work as a student activist and later as a political staffer, including a role as chief of staff to former ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope.
Barr entered the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2006, filling a vacancy, and soon took on various ministerial roles. His portfolios have included Education, Tourism, Economic Development, and Health. Barr became the ACT’s Treasurer in 2011 and, in 2014, was elected as the Chief Minister following the retirement of Katy Gallagher.

As Australia’s first openly gay head of government, he has been a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity.
