Cat Kazan, Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia
The three-meter sculpture composition called the Cat of Kazan was created by the local artist, sculptor and merited art critic of the republic Igor Bashmakov and set up in the centre of Kazan.
The initiative of setting up such a monument belonged to Kazan dwellers, administration and entrepreneurs. The materials were financed by a private sponsor. Works on the cat’s sculpture went on for three months.
The cat is depicted as sitting on a sofa with cushions. It is stroking his whiskers with one paw and scratching its belly with another paw, at the same time looking upwards at a mouse juggling a ball on her nose.
The Cat of Kazan can be found in Russian lubok pictures. However, according to Igor Bashmakov, the sculpture portrays a certain cat – the legendary mouser called Alabrys.
