Cathedral of the Assumption Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra, Sergiyev Posad, Moscow Oblast, Russia
Over the centuries, on the territory of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, a unique ensemble of different buildings has been formed, including more than fifty buildings and structures. In the south-western part of the monastery there is a white-stone Trinity Cathedral (1422-1423), placed on the site of the first wooden church of the XIV century. It was around him that a monastery ensemble was formed. East of the cathedral in 1476 by Pskov masters was erected a brick church-belfry in the name of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.
The Assumption Cathedral was erected in 1559-1585 by the type of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. Frescoes of the Assumption Cathedral were created in 1684. At the north-western corner of the cathedral in place of the western porch in 1780 was arranged a tent with a tent roof over the graves of the family of Tsar Boris Godunov.
Opposite the Assumption Cathedral is a complex of the treasury building and adjoining hospital wards with a tent church. Zosima and Savvaty Solovetsky (1635-1638). Behind them are the fortress chamber and the complex of the Kelar Chambers (the turn of the 16th-17th centuries). On the site of the ancient gate church in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh (1513) at the main entrance to the monastery was built a five-domed gatehouse in honor of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (1692-1699).
Decorated with white stone carved trapezium with the church of St. Sergius of Radonezh (1686-1692) is made in the style of “Naryshkin” baroque – Russian version of one of the great European styles. Until the end of the XVII century. in the Trinity-Sergius Monastery in the same style were erected royal palaces, Nadkladeznaya chapel and the above-mentioned gate church in honor of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.
