Dame Sarah is a shining example of service, leadership and integrity in British diplomacy. Over more than three decades, she has distinguished herself by choosing challenges over comfort, and collective responsibility over personal gain — always grounded in courage, insight, and a deep belief in the power of diplomacy to build a safer, fairer world.
From the very beginning, Sarah’s trajectory has been shaped by purpose. She joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1991, embracing roles that spanned continents and issues — from peacekeeping at the UN in New York and Vienna, to nuclear and EU economic affairs in Madrid.
Her work as Strategy Co-ordinator for the UN Mission in Kosovo demonstrated early on her ability to make an impact in the most demanding environments. She then took on the profound responsibility of serving as British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone (and non-resident Ambassador to Liberia) from 2006-2008, where diplomacy meets the front line.
She continued to rise, taking on leadership roles of increasing strategic weight: from Director, Strategic Finance; to Director, Defence & International Security; then to Director-General, Defence & Intelligence — each successive post a testament to her mastery of complex issues at the intersection of foreign policy, security and finance.
One of the hallmarks of her career has been service at NATO, where from 2017 to 2022 she was the UK’s Permanent Representative. In those years she led the UK’s voice through a period of rising global tensions, renewed threats, and evolving security challenges — always with calm resolve, moral clarity, and commitment to collaboration.
From 2022 to 2024, she served as Deputy National Security Adviser and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs, shaped by the urgency of maintaining stability in an unpredictable world, ensuring that the UK’s foreign policy and national security remained tightly aligned.
In April 2025 she assumed the role of British High Commissioner to Australia and Head of the United Kingdom’s Oceania Network — a capstone to her diplomatic journey so far. With this appointment, she brings her wealth of experience, her refined judgement, and her unshakable values to strengthen ties, nurture trust, and look forward to new horizons.
