Liz Kendall was appointed Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology on 5 September 2025. She was previously Secretary of State for Work and Pensions between 5 July 2024 and 5 September 2025. She was elected as the MP for Leicester West in May 2010.

What we do
- Driving Innovation and R&D: DSIT’s primary goal is to accelerate innovation and productivity by investing in world-class science, research, and development. This includes identifying and supporting key technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and engineering biology. The department is also responsible for increasing private investment in R&D to make the UK a more innovative economy.
- Delivering Digital and Physical Infrastructure: The department is in charge of building and maintaining the infrastructure needed to support a modern, high-tech economy. This includes overseeing the rollout of high-speed broadband and ensuring the UK has the necessary physical and digital infrastructure to support its economy, public services, and national security.
- Regulating Technology: DSIT is responsible for creating a regulatory environment that promotes innovation while ensuring new technologies are developed and deployed safely. It leads on legislation related to data protection, online safety, and the pro-innovation regulation of AI.
- Strengthening Public Services through Technology: The department works to put public services, like the NHS and schools, at the forefront of innovation. It champions the use of new technologies and digital services to improve efficiency and outcomes for citizens.
- Promoting International Collaboration: DSIT works to strengthen the UK’s international partnerships and influence in science and technology. This includes collaborating with leading nations on research and development to address shared global challenges.
