P.T. Usha, widely known as the “Queen of Indian Track and Field,” is a celebrated Indian athlete and the current president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Born on June 27, 1964, in the village of Payyoli, Kerala, Usha’s athletic talent was discovered at a young age, leading her to join a sports school in Kannur. Under the guidance of her coach, O.M. Nambiar, she quickly rose to prominence. Usha made her international debut at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as the youngest Indian athlete at the time. Her significant breakthrough came at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, where she won silver medals in the 100m and 200m events, and gold in the 4x100m relay
One of Usha’s most memorable moments occurred at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she narrowly missed a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles by just one-hundredth of a second, setting a national and Asian record. This performance established her as the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic final. Throughout the 1980s, Usha dominated Asian athletics, winning multiple gold medals at the Asian Championships and Asian Games. Her exceptional achievements include five gold medals at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, making her the first athlete to win so many golds in a single edition of the Games
After retiring from competitive athletics in 2000, Usha dedicated herself to nurturing future athletes through the Usha School of Athletics, which she founded in 2002. Her contributions to sports were recognized with numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award. In 2022, Usha made history once again by becoming the first woman and the first Olympian to be elected president of the IOA.
