His involvement in football management began with FC Porto, where he served on the management board from 2000 to 2010. In December 2011, Gomes was elected president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), where he has driven substantial modernization efforts, improved football infrastructure, and overseen the triumphs of the national teams, notably the UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League victories
