About the German Museum of Books and Writing

The mission of the German Museum of Books and Writing at the German National Library in Leipzig is the collection, exhibition, communication, and scholarly processing of artefacts from the history of books, writing, and media. Founded in 1884 as the German Museum of the Book Trade in Leipzig, we are considered the oldest museum in the world in our field and, in terms of the scope and quality of our holdings, one of the most significant museums dedicated to the culture of the book. Our permanent exhibition narrates 5,000 years of media history as a story of knowledge, freedom of opinion, and censorship.

As a vibrant hub of cultural education, especially for disadvantaged groups, the museum also serves as a scientific documentation center for book culture and media history within a strong network of research partners. Our offerings and services are aimed at both professionals and the general public. A central concern of the museum is to consider books and writing even in the age of digital media.
