Lieutenant Colonel H.Jones VC OBE – Memorial

Lieutenant Colonel Herbert (‘H’) Jones VC, OBE, Commanding Officer 2 PARA, was severely wounded in a solo charge against an Argentine position on Darwin Hill and subsequently died of his wounds when Darwin Hill was secured but before he could be evacuated. Lt Richard Nunn, the helicopter pilot who was tasked to evacuate the CO was also killed and his co-pilot severely injured when his Scout helicopter was attacked by an Argentine Pucara aircraft as he took off from A Echelon at Camilla Creek House. Lt Col Jones is buried at San Carlos Cemetery, Falkland Islands. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

On May 28, 1982, Jones, commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, led his troops in a daring assault against heavily fortified Argentine positions. Despite being outnumbered and under intense enemy fire, Jones fearlessly rallied his men and pressed forward, personally leading assaults on enemy positions. During the fierce fighting, Jones repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to encourage and inspire his troops. His selfless actions and unwavering resolve proved instrumental in turning the tide of the battle, leading to the capture of Goose Green and the surrender of over 1,000 Argentine troops.

Tragically, during the final stages of the battle, Jones was mortally wounded while leading a charge against a machine gun position. Despite his grievous injuries, he continued to encourage his men until he succumbed to his wounds.
