TD Berlin

The TD Berlin is a theater in the middle of the city on the Molkenmarkt between Alexanderplatz and the Spree. The schedule includes a weekly changing program of new productions and performances related to current social issues. We invite our viewers to more than 30 different theater works and related formats every year.

As a production location, we are an important partner for independent companies and artists in local, national and international networks. We cooperate with professional theater professionals and young talents in the development of their projects. The program focus is on the further development of contemporary spoken theater , but also on festivals and events in urban spaces.

Our goal is to tell stories in an unusual way and to open up space for new readings. The TD Berlin sees itself as a place for reflection and negotiation. In the program we therefore take positions that are both aesthetically stimulating and relevant in terms of content. We are becoming increasingly involved in debates about the future of our citiesand show theater works on current issues of coexistence. The changing stages and rooms are also meeting places for urban society to gather and question each other in an exchange of artistic statements.

“The TD has made itself indispensable in the canon of independent venues and in collaboration with professionally producing independent companies. Text-based theater is the trademark of the TD and at the same time a unique selling point of the venue…, which has long been one of the anchor institutions of Berlin’s independent scene. Central to standards and performance practice is contemporary spoken theater, in which the narrative level and representation play a central role. [A] success story …” (from the report of the concept funding jury)

The TD Berlin was founded in 2003 by a group of artists as a theater discounter . For a long time it was an (im)temporary solution due to precarious financing, but from this time it has retained the courage for constant change, the strength for new departures and its resistance. In its productions, the house has always debated the opportunities for social intervention, but also the working conditions and forms of production in the theater and has entered into provocative friction with other disciplines. In the early years, the founding name “Theaterdiscounter” was an ironic and combative counter-term that quickly developed into a seal of quality in the scene.

After its temporary use in Berlin’s former telegraph office, the theater has been located in the former telecommunications office (east) at Klosterstrasse 44 since 2009. The rooms ( room plan as PDF ) on the 2nd floor with a view of the Red Town Hall currently include a large, convertible presentation hall (370 m² ), offices, rehearsal rooms and workshop areas. They are also suitable for conferences, festivals, exhibitions and transdisciplinary events. Sound, lighting and video technology that meets high standards as well as the variable stage and audience podium adapt to a wide range of requirements.
